Why Sunflowers?

As a gardener there are many things I do on instinct, originally sunflowers were one of those items. It is something that is easily enjoyed and planted with the younger children. They sprout easily and are fun to plant and watch grow with younger kids. They look amazing and grow rapidly and HUGE! I often plant many sunflowers around my vegetables in my garden and I am surprised at the amount of people who tell me this is their favorite flower. Beyond its aesthetics the sunflower is an amazing flower for many reasons.

I plant this ginormous flower is….. pollination!

Sunflowers attract bees! This causes pollination of other vegetables.

I have been doing a lot of research on “companion” gardening and they are a great companion to Tomatoes!

They grow so nicely together and make tomatoes taste sweeter! Planting basil and garlics around them repel the bugs too!

I planted tomato, sunflowers and garlic in this container. Look at all this growth!

Planting cucumbers around sunflowers will allow the cucumbers to grow vertically up the sunflower! How awesome is that!

Use the seeds to eat and plant again for next season!

First we gently rub off excess pollen

To expose the seeds.

Then we dry out the seeds…

Then we replant the seeds…

In a couple of months they will grow into these…
